5 Social Changes Happening Now That Mirror The 60’s & 70’s

The saying is, as a culture we cycle every 30 years or so.  Everything from fashion, music & social trends seem to cycle back around.  You’ve most likely seen something and said to yourself “that used to be popular when I was X years old.”  If you’re under 30 like me, you’ve had to rely on pictures, stories & some history to get a sense for what things were like during a time when you didn’t exist.  For some of you reading this article you were probably raised by parents who did live during the 60’s or 70’s.  As social responsibility was a pretty strong factor in my upbringing, and continue to be very important to me today, I thought I’d share 5 social changes I see going on right now that are reminiscent of that time & are exciting to see!

1.)  Media like Tv, Radio & Books used to be only accessible through one of the big corporations who made all the rules.  Now more than ever the shift is towards individuals and creators, having the ability to be publishers, authors & video makers.  Social Media has been a huge part of this as well as we are all able to have a voice & have affordable or free mediums in which to express ourselves.  I may get some flack for saying this, but in a different way this is a new Revolution.  Not it war terms but in the sense that we have put the power back in the hands of  people to be the creators, curators & publishers.

2.)  Right now the workplace & work environment are drastically changing.  There is major shift in social cause as more and more people are looking for purpose and meaning to their work.  People want to know that their work matters & contributes to society in a positive way.  Places with poor work conditions and negative work environments are being forced to improve & adapt or risk going out of business.  Workers are looking for positive and progressive cultures and environments to be associated with, and ones with a culture that embraces their individual work style.  I think this is very similar in ways to the enlightenment and fighting for social change that went on in the late 60’s and 70’s.

3.)  U.K. & British musicians have dominated the charts & popular music this year and much of last year.  They are bringing with them a fresh new sound of music, that has been lacking for quite some time.  The British Phonographic Industry found that 56 of 2011’s Top 100 albums were from UK acts, with Adele, Coldplay and Jessie J being the biggest sellers over all.  BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor said: “A string of great albums by British artists has delivered the strongest performance in the domestic albums market.  Now we won’t get into comparing Coldplay to the Beatles, but its an interesting social change none the less.

4.)  I find we have become much more colorful and have increasingly more opportunity to express ourselves and our individual tastes.  In this case I’m referring to things like fashion and design.  While paisley has been back and forth for some time, I think the amount of crazy and custom color choices & patterns we have available to us today is quite cool.   From cars, to clothes, to electronics we have given everyone a way in which to show who they are & be different.  I feel like this screams 60’s & 70’s, from Tie Dyes to Volkswagens to the seemingly endless amount of great color examples I could give.

5.)  Lastly but maybe one of the strongest similarities I see, is the concern & awareness for the environment.  I’ve seen a new social consciousness & responsibility from people as they realize that there’s got to be a better way.  Technology & convenience have allowed us to do a LOT of good with very little effort & often times actually save us money!  People are seeing that we have to live in harmony with nature, because without it we can’t advance.  We’ve known what these household, lawn, & industrial chemicals do the environment and we know that we are out of excuses.  The way in which were innovating by using our once thrown away materials to make cars, homes and many other things shows that people know want to make a difference and take part in what are now proven alternatives.  We obviously have the 60’s and 70’s to thank for many great movements and laws passed that helped us protect the environment.  And now were working on the sustainability & growth of those movements.

So those are my observations of the social changes going on right now & how they remind me of the 60’s and 70’s.  What do you think?  Let me know in the comments below what you’re seeing.
